The origins of Yonezawa Castle are said to date back to the Kamakura period, when Nagai Tokihiro (長井時広, d. 1241), a local steward (地頭 Jitō), established his residence there. Later, the Nagai clan (長井氏) was replaced by the Date clan (伊達氏), who took control of the Okitama region...Yonezawa Castle
