Uesugi Shrine

Uesugi Shrine (上杉神社 Uesugi Jinja) is a Shintō shrine located in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Situated within Matsugasaki Park, the site of Yonezawa Castle, it enshrines Uesugi Kenshin. It was formerly classified as a bekkaku kanpeisha (別格官幣社, a special government-supported shrine). Uesugi Shrine is one of several shrines dedicated to the founders of feudal domains, a practice that emerged in the late Edo to early Meiji period.
