The Satsuma Rebellion, known in Japanese as Seinan Sensō (西南戦争) or Seinan no Eki (西南の役), was the last major armed uprising against the reforms of the new Meiji government. It was fought by the former samurai of the Satsuma Domain (modern-day Kagoshima Prefecture) under the leadership of Saigō Takamori and lasted from 29 January 1877 to 24 September 1877. The Meiji government's victory proved the effectiveness of its conscript army in modern warfare.
