The Hōjō family (北条氏) was a prominent warrior lineage that held de facto control over Japan for more than a century during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), serving as hereditary regents (執権 shikken) to the Kamakura shogunate. Their rule persisted until they were overthrown during the Kemmu Restoration (建武の新政), a brief attempt to re-establish direct imperial rule.
