Minamoto no Yoritomo (源頼朝, 1147-1199) was the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, which became Japan's first warrior-led government and ruled from 1192 to 1333. He was the third son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo (源 義朝, 1123-1160), who headed the Seiwa Genji (清和源氏), a prominent branch of the Minamoto clan descended from Emperor Seiwa (清和天皇, 850-880).
