The Ōnin War (応仁の乱), which broke out in Kyōto in 1467 and continued until 1477, was named after the Ōnin era (応仁, 1467–69) during which it began. This conflict effectively marked the end of the fragile balance of power that had existed since the late 14th century between the Muromachi shogunate (室町幕府) and its provincial military governors, the shugo (守護). The war plunged the country into a prolonged period of fragmentation and civil strife known as the Sengoku period (戦国時代, 1467–1568)...
